My First Sewing Machine was the Singer 401A. I’ve had two of these. One was my first that my mom gave me. She borrowed that back when her machine was acting crazy. I was lucky to find another one to replace it. This machine sat down in my basement for years. I never touched it maybe to sew some gathered fabric or something. But then I had and expensive Janome that I paid over $5000 for.
I still can’t believe I spent that much for a sewing machine. Well never again folks. I’m loving my vintage machine. I ran into some very hard times and had to sell all my fabulously expensive machines for 1/2 what I paid for them. That’s life. Then I bought my Brother machine online. This machine is fine but not like my expensive ones. And most recently it’s really been a pain in the butt.
So I dug out the old HEAVY Singer 401A. Cleaned her all up, gave her some juice (oil) cleaned out all the fuzzy stuff, which wasn’t bad. I’ve been sewing with her every since. I love it. I see them on ebay all the time for under $300. That is saying something if you have to pay that much for a used old machine then they have to be something special. My machine was in a sewing alterations shop. So that tells you something. They wanted the best most durable machine that didn’t mess up all the time.
There you have it folks. I really love my first sewing machine and I hope she will be with me for another 50 years. Lol! What was your first sewing machine?
